How to Calculate a Tip (Without the Math Stress)
3 min read
Tipping should not require a calculator at the table, but a wrong guess is awkward. A couple of simple mental tricks let you nail a fair tip and split the bill in seconds.
Here is how to calculate a tip in your head, plus a free calculator for splitting among a group.
Step by step
- 1Find 10% first
Move the decimal one place left. On a 60.00 bill, 10% is 6.00. This is your building block.
- 2Build common tip rates from it
20% is double 10% (12.00). 15% is 10% plus half of it (6.00 + 3.00 = 9.00). 18% is roughly 10% plus 10% minus a bit.
- 3Add it to the bill
Add the tip to the total: a 60.00 meal with a 20% tip is 60 + 12 = 72.00.
- 4Split among the group
Divide the grand total by the number of people. The Tip Calculator does the tip and the split at once, including uneven rounding.
Tips
- In the US, 15-20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service, with 20% for good service.
- Tip on the pre-tax subtotal if you want to be precise, though many people just tip on the total for simplicity.
- For large groups, check the receipt - a gratuity may already be included.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?
Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left, then double it. On a 45 bill, 10% is 4.50, so 20% is 9.00.
Should I tip on the total or the pre-tax amount?
Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more precise; tipping on the total is simpler and common.
How does the bill split work?
Enter the bill, tip percentage, and number of people, and the calculator shows the total with tip and the amount each person owes.
