Hours Calculator
Free hours calculator. Work out the total hours and minutes between a start and end time, subtract unpaid breaks, and get your worked hours for a timesheet.
Calculate hours worked
Enter your start and end times and the calculator works out the total time between them, then subtracts any unpaid break to give your worked hours โ shown both as hours and minutes and as a decimal for payroll. It even handles overnight shifts where the end time is earlier than the start.
Why decimal hours?
Payroll systems usually want hours as a decimal, not hours-and-minutes. For example, 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours. Add your hourly rate and the tool also estimates your gross pay for the shift.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours worked?โ
Enter your start and end times; the calculator finds the difference, subtracts any unpaid break, and shows the total in hours and minutes plus a decimal.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?โ
Divide the minutes by 60. So 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 decimal hours โ the format most payroll systems use.
Does it handle overnight shifts?โ
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift runs past midnight and adds 24 hours.
